PARC SLIP NATURE RESERVE

Dear Parent(s),
Next week is our School’s Eco Week. As part of the week each year group has been assigned a different environmentally friendly area. Year 5’s topic is bio-diversity.

Biodiversity is the wealth of wildlife in the world around us, from wildflowers and insects to mammals and birds. It includes all the woodlands, meadows, wetlands and other natural habitats, as well as man-made places such as plantations, fields, canals – even ‘wasteland’ can be valuable for wildlife.

In order to get the most out of the week we have planned a visit to Parc Slip Nature Reserve, Tondu, Bridgend. The site sits on a former open cast mine which was given to the Wildlife Trust by the National Coal Board in the 1990 and restored to a nature reserve. Whilst there, we will be pond dipping and bug hunting to find out just how much wildlife exists in our environment today. Earlier in the week we will be visited by Mr. Richard Wistow an ecologist working for RCTCBC. He will accompany us on a walk around Pontyclun and explain the rich diversity of wildlife in and around our school. May I take this opportunity to thank Mr. Wistow (a parent of a child in J6) for giving up his time. Please could you fill in the slip below and return it with a donation of £2 to cover the bus to go to Parc Slip Nature reserve. A packed lunch will be required (no cans/glass bottles please). Pupils will be advised of appropriate clothing to wear early next week.

Please detach and return by Friday 9th October
