Eco-Week Dydd Llun

What a wonderful afternoon J5 had today. After an introduction to bio-diversity this morning followed by a climate change talk, J5 were fortunate enough to be taught by Mr J Francis and Mr T Jones, retired science teachers from Radyr Comprehensive.

Mr Jones and Mr Francis taught the class about food chains, photosynthesis, habitats and the local area.

The children learnt about and saw clippings from trees in the local areas - from ash to beech to horse chestnut. They learnt about Japanese Knot Weed and Indian Balsam and the effect that this has in the locality.

Mr Jones drew a 3d model of habitats in the local area and the children were given their own copy which they coloured in and cut out to make a model. All the children were engrossed in the activity.

The children enjoyed looking at the different trees from the local area and descibing differences between the leaves. They also learnt the scientific symbols for oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Mr Francis had been busy collecting acorns and conkers which he passed around the class. He told us about seeing salmon on the river Elai due to the water becoming clean. He also told us that otters had been spotted in the locality near the rivers.

Plenty of listening skills were apparent today in J5 and the children shared ideas whilst creating their models in Talking Partners.

Mr Francis and Mr Jones will be returning on Wednesday to see how their models are getting on! We would like to say a huge thank you for your hard work, we really really enjoyed the afternoon.
