CROSS-CURRICULAR MATHS - MOUNTAIN HEIGHTS AND DATES OF EXPEDITIONS TO THE WORLD'S HIGHEST MOUNTAINS

It's second lesson already - 11.35am!

What are J5 learning?

They are about to tell you......

Alex - this morning we've been linking maths to geography!!!

Menna- Yes Alex, we have been doing a graph showing how high mountains around the world are and rounding them up to the nearest 100.

Ben D - That was the easy part, now we have got to look at a sheet with famous explorers and work out who climbed what mountains and when and order them according to the earliest date

Elliott - yes and we have to add up all the mountain heights but we are lucky because we got caculators .

Better get back to work J5!

Geography through Photographs

J5 enjoyed developing their geography skills this afternoon by working in pairs to answer questions relating to this half term's topic Snowdonia.

Here is one of the photographs that the children studied this afternoon. Children were asked to answer questions such as "Explain how the wall has been built?" "Where do you think the rocks came from?" and "Why are people not encouraged to use the gate?"
Here you can see J5 actively engaged in the task in hand!
The photographs helped the children understand more about the physical features of Snowdonia. Work quickly Emily and Katie, you've got another six stations to go!

As well as the photographs, some of the stations needed the children to read OS maps and locate various coordinates to find key features.

The children learnt about the tourist impact in Snowdonia and how the town of Llanberis has benefitted from this.

Globes, maps and atlases were available in the class in order to answer some rather challenging questions.
Da iawn J5

Learning is Fun in J5!

Hello, it's Lily and Mackensie reporting!

Mrs Marlow says we've worked really well as Talking Partners today. Here is what we think of our day:
We learnt a lot about geography today by going around different stations. the stations had lots of photographs of Snowdonia and we were reading maps and drawing destinations.
We also liked arguing this morning about the country code in English and justifying our opinions about which rules were the most important.

J5 Enquiry into Snowdonia

Here are some of J5 working hard creating their 3D models of Snowdonia.
As you can see a lot of hard work has gone into their enquiry.
The children also prepared a short presentation on one aspect to teach to J6.

Look at those medals!!!

Well done !
Year 5 is so proud of this young man, he competes most weekends in show jumping competitions and is so talented that he usually comes away with medals and trophies. Last weekend he won gold medals in two equestrian competitions in Talygarn, competing against 14 and 15 year olds - how impressive. Huge congratulations to you .

We enjoy learning from each other in Year 5

This morning, J5 taught J6 all about Snowdonia through visual presentations. Here is what one group remembered from the presentations.

From listening to J5's presentations we have learned that:

.Llanberis is a small village in Snowdonia,
.There is a railway all the way to the summit on Snowdonia,
.A million people come to Snowdonia every year,
.Snowdonia is part of the Cumbrian Mountains,
.Some tourists come to visit and some come to stay,
.The summit is 1800 metres above sea level,
.since 1896 people have travelled up snowdon,
.There are 5 footpaths,
.836 miles,
.there is a pipe with electricity in a pipe that goes up the mountain,
.Snowdonia's mountain is one of the best place to climb in the world.

Well done Ben and Jamie and well done to J5, you were excellent teachers!

Gymnastic Champion in J5

Congratulations to Bridget in J5 for winning the gold medal in her Gymnastics Competition on Saturday. She competed in four events and was the overall winner, passing her Grade 11 with a distinction. What a star!

PRACTICAL GEOGRAPHY - CREATING SNOWDONIA

J5 have been busy creating 3D designs of Snowdonia this afternoon for geography. We will be finishing them off in the morning and the children will then be presenting a two minute speech on one aspect of Snowdonia -tourism, safety and weather, changes to the landscape, role of the National Trust and the Countryside Council, environmental/physical features, visitors and outdoor activities available.

Have a look through the websites below if you a have chance this evening, as you may need to add some more labels to your 3D designs in the mornings. Look for village names, names of lakes, footpaths etc... Try to use some geographical vocabulary too please. If you can find 5 facts/ place names/ information about distances/ centres/ monuments etc..... your group will have plenty of information for tomorrow morning. You may even find information about the number of tourists/ activities on offer, anything that will add to your design.

Good Luck - I'm looking forward to seeing your final designs!

FLYING HIGH IN YEAR 5

Today the Welsh Hawking Centre came to school and brought their Birds Of Prey with them.

The children loved the afternoon and learnt loads about the birds.

Get auditioning!

Hi Year 5!

Don't forget that Pontyclun's got Talent takes place on Tuesday - so practise your routines tomorrow if you didn't get to perform today. The remaining auditions will be on Monday morning.

We hope you all enjoyed the birds of prey today? Mr Llewellyn has promised to put the photos/ videos on over the weekend so that you can show your family.

Enjoy your day off tomorrow!

Mrs Marlow

P.s Apart from your science/maths homework, J5 need to remember to bring their topic book covers back to school on Monday ("Parklife" - linked to Snowdonia/Brecon). At the moment we only have a few completed covers. Feel free to design your own using Internet images or simply draw it.

Homework for week ending Friday 13th March

This weeks homework is interactive, click on the activities in order starting with the first below. Have a go at each activity and don't move on to the next until you have completed the activity by getting at least five questions correct. Once you have done this you can click on the comments button below and let myself and Mrs. Marlow know that you have completed your homework and how you found it (don't forget to leave your name).

Two Success Criteria: To recognise the relationship between width, length and area. To be able to work out the perimeter of shapes when only given some of the lengths. Good luck.

Finally have a go at the life cycles homework:

A Practical, Fun Maths Evening With KS2 Parents.

On Monday night, we invited our Key Stage Two parents into school to have a look at some of the practical maths problem solving activities that we do. Twelve Year 5 children and two Year 6 children volunteered to help run the maths stations - well done to all and 10 housepoints each! Thank you ever so much to the parents who attended the event, it seemed like you had lots of fun - especially with the Countdown Challenge!
The following day in Year 5, we had an enormous maths carousel where the children were able to have a go at every activity in a fun packed morning. Why not have a look at our interactive maths page and try out some of the fun activities at:

http://www.rctednet.net/pontyclunprimary/page28.html the first hyperlink takes you to an amazing site.

Maths problem solving - Coordinates

Last week we were working on coordinates in our maths lessons and on Friday the children took part in a really challenging, practical lesson. All of the children were required to use what the had learned to answer questions around the school. Everyone enjoyed the lesson and most children were able to find the answers to the questions from the map. It was quite tricky on purpose to get the children thinking!
