Practical Science - Investigating Our Bodies

This morning, J5 and some of J6 were researching the human body as part of our "Keeping Healthy" science topic.
The children were given a variety of books from our school library to use to collect relevant information to help with the task.
They were asked to find out about joints, muscles, veins and arteries.

As you can see, the groups came up with several interesting facts. One group found out that there were 26 bones in the foot.

Here we can see the children carefully selecting a book to help with their research.

The children all had different roles in their groups - researchers, sketchers, group leader.

100% concentration from this group! Do you know where the patella is?

That looks an interesting fact! What is special about the femur again?

This group were fascinated with the intestines.

Why do we have a back bone? Why do we have a skull?

The children certainly found out plenty of interesting facts about the body. They learnt lots and this was shown in our end of day body quiz. Da iawn.

Fire Safety

Yesterday, Pontyclun Fire Service visited J5 and J6. We had a safety talk in the hall followed by a tour of the fire engine on the yard.

The children were able to sit in the fire engine and look at all the equipment the firemen need to carry on their van.

Above you can see the pumps.

The children watched a DVD of a pretend fire situation. They saw how quickly a bedroom caught on fire and understood the dangers of leaving hairdryers etc... on beds.

After watching the DVD, the children had a talk about what to do if they were ever in a situation like that on the DVD. The firemen were pleased with the sensible responses given by J5 and J6.

What do the firemen use this piece of equipment for? Ask J5 or J6!
The firemen gave the children fire activity books to complete and also provided them with a telephone number to call if they need smoke alarms in their house. The brigade will call at your house free of charge and fit them. Mrs Marlow had them fitted this time last year.

As you can see, the boys were over the moon looking at the fire engine!

The girls were keen to listen to the fire stories.

Hang on! I recognise the two fire men below! - do you?

E3 DAY

Hi year 5 I hope that you are all ok, thank you for your lovely comments, we have decided to name the baby Jac Lewis Llewellyn. I will be back to school as soon as I can. Below are the E3 day photographs that you took. Be sure to have a look and I will see you soon.

HELLO YEAR 5

Hello year 5 I was born last night at 20.44, I am 21 inches long and weigh 7lb 15 Ounces. (I am sure that Mrs. Marlow can organise some maths for you out of those numbers). I am the newest member of the Llewellyn family and am looking forward to coming in to school to meet you. I don't have a name just yet but am sure that will be sorted very soon. Until then have a great day and a lovely weekend. My Dad said something about "no homework for J6" this weekend, but I don't know what that means yet. See you soon.

E3 Day at Y Pant

In September the children will be given the opportunity join the E3 scheme that is run by Y Pant. The children can take part in lots of different activities ranging from learning magic skills, to rock climbing. On Tuesday all the year 5 children had the chance to experience some of the activities. The scheme is run after school and is aimed at improving transition from the primary to the secondary school. It is a lot of fun and the children all seemed very eager to get involved.

They used make up to create artificial wounds.

The children learnt self defence..

Had a go at art and craft...

And even tried rock climbing ...

DT CHALLENGE

Last Friday was our DT challenge day where we had to create an attractive looking healthy meal for a younger child that was going to encourage them to eat a healthy diet. The children have been working really hard on their keeping healthy project for the last few weeks and really enjoyed creating the meals.

We invited the reception children over to peer assess our work and tell us if we had been successful in our aims.
We realised that it is not always easy to get children to eat a healthy, balanced diet but there are ways to encourage them.

This meal has a range of food groups, can you name them.
E.g. Vitamins in oranges

We had to do the washing up at the end.

We learnt skills such as cutting, peeling, slicing and arranging.
