Big Pit was fantastic!

Did they really work in that tiny area?

The coal was transported on the conveyor belt.

This piece of machinery was nicknamed the "Widow maker" because of the amount of dust that it created.

The shower room and locker rooms .

Going underground...

Yesterday J5 and J6 went to Big Pit. We had lots of fun and learnt plenty of information about the coal mining industry in South Wales.

We saw lots of old artefact's and visited a replica coal mine and experienced a pretend explosion.

Boys and trains! say no more.......

Here we can see some other J5 boys collecting information about the drams.

The children learnt the importance of ventilation in the coal mines and practised opening and shutting the mine doors.

Above you can see my group smiling! They are relieved to be back on the ground instead of 300ft beneath the ground! The tour was fantastic - we learnt about Davey lamps, trappers, ventilation amnd experienced the pitch black. We also saw where the pit ponies were kept.

Don't look so tired J5 - you have only spent 12 hours down the mine digging for coal!

We saw the lockers that were used by the miners and the baths they showered in.

The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes

J5 and J6 have been studying The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes over the last two weeks. Today, J5 did some hotseating (three children took on the roles of characters within the narrative poem and answered questions asked by the other children). We had lots of fun and the children thoroughly enjoyed the exercise

New Camera!

Gosh it has certainly been a while since I've posted something on the blog! Well now that my new camera has arrived I am back in business! All charged up and ready to go!

Mr Llewellyn and myself would like to say a massive well done to all of the children who completed the kite project - we were amazed by the effort you put in! If you haven't yet completed the project, you still have time left.

Mrs Marlow

P.S Keep reading and writing exciting phrases!
