This term our topic is Heroes and Villains. This topic has a History focus, with children learning about Heroes and Villains from the past and present. During this topic children will be writing newspaper reports and play-scripts. Children will learn about famous Welsh stars and will be encouraged to use their internet researching skills to find out more information about heroes and villains.

There will not be a school trip during this topic, but instead the children will be meeting the Paralympic athlete Rhys Jones.

Your child has been given a reading book and a reading record.  Children will be reading with the teacher once a week, one week individually when reading will be commented on in individual reading records, and the         alternate week as part of a guided group reading session. Please ensure your child brings their record and book on their specified reading day (noted in reading record). We encourage each child to read at home every day for at least 15 minutes. Please update your child’s reading diary weekly.

During indoor PE, children should wear black or navy shorts with a t-shirt (house colours) or leotard.

During outside PE, children should wear shorts/ tracksuit bottoms, a house t-shirt and trainers.

Long hair should be tied back and earrings should be taken out or not worn on the day of PE.

The children have been provided with homework books and can cover/decorate them as they wish. Every Monday the children will be given both English and Maths homework to be completed by the Friday. The children should stick their homework in their homework book in order to keep it safe.

Some weeks the children may be asked to complete topic homework and this should be presented neatly in their homework books.
Children are also encouraged to learn their times tables and spellings given as this will assist them in literacy and numeracy lessons.

River Walk

This term Year 5 have been learning about 'The Story of Moses' with both Mrs Barter and Mrs Brown. The children spent a lot of time put themselves in the position of others (imagine how Moses mother felt when he had to leave him go in the basket along the river). The children use 'sticks' as a symbol of the basket and explained their thoughts and feelings as a parent.
The children thoroughly enjoyed the walk and as a result produce fantastic letters and Diary entries.

Year 5 Making Mandel Bread

Last term year 5 were learning about Passover in R.E with Mrs Brown and Mrs Barter. The children had the opportunity to make their own Mandel Bread!

Our new topic for this half term is 'More than Mods an Rockers! This is a historical topic where the children will be learning about life in the 1960s, such as ; significant historical figures and events, musical culture, fashion influences and the range of artistic skills to create 'pop art'.

If you have anything that would be suitable for the classroom based on our topic this term this would be highly appreciated, for example; books, magazines, CDs or fashion accessories etc.

As you probably already know the children have a homework task to complete by the 3rd of March as this is an inset day, the homework is due to return on the. 4th of March.
