Geography Carousel - Developing Independent Learning

J5 had a lesson with a difference this afternoon. Six stations were set up within the classroom and the children had to work independently, researching their questions from the resources provided on the tables.

Station 1 involved using atlases and wall maps to locate Snowdonia National Park. Children were asked to sketch the journey from Cardiff to Snowdonia.

Gathering information was a skill developed throughout the activity as well as extracting relevant information.

At first, the children found the task challenging as they didn't have steps to follow and were allowed to present their findings however they wished.

However they soon got the hang of it!
The other stations involved looking at photos taken by Jodie's mum in Snowdonia last weekend and discussing with talking partners what the photos showed us about Snowdonia.

One group had to choose from a selection of photos linked to key geograpical features of Snowdonia and ask enquiring questions about the photos.

Leaflets and information fact sheets were provided for other stations. One station involved writing information about Snowdonia for a group of keen geographers - this was tricky as it involved the children using geographical enquiry questions.

Plenty of thinking and communication skills were developed throughout this lesson and the children worked extremely hard. They will be finishing off the activity in the morning.

Well done J5 - you certainly became more independent learners this afternoon.
