Science - Investigating Food Packaging

This afternoon we had lots of fun in J5! As part of our Healthy Eating Science topic, we were sorting food packages into food groups. We set up seven stations around the room and each group rotated and faced a different challenge.
Up above you can see one of the groups looking pleased with themselves as they were the first to a) sort the carbohydrates correctly b) order them from highest to lowest carbohydrate content. Bendigedig!

The challenge above was to find out which food items in the whole class had the highest protein, fat and carbohydrate content. The three winning products were Choco Rice Cereal, Dry Peanuts and a Yorkie. Do you know which is the protein, fat and carbohydrate?

The children were reading the nutritional value labels on the back of the food packets. When comparing items on different tables, we had to make sure we were reading the "per 100g" label to make it fair. Ask a member of J5 to explain why.

This group were surprised to find out the high protein content of prawns.

This group have filled their green hoola hoop with carbohydrates! We learnt that there are sugary and starchy carbohydrates and that both types give us energy.

The challenge above was to find out which of the items on the table was highest and lowest for protein.

Thinking Skill - Showing surprise at unexpected outcomes.
Not all of the answers were as easy as first thought for this group! Low fat yoghurt? Orange Juice? The children had to study the packages hard.

Good science skills, communicating and collaborating today J5. You worked hard - well done.
Mrs Marlow
