Investigating Geography Issues in the Local Area - Traffic

This term, Year 5's Geography Topic is "Investigating Issues in the Locality." Firstly, we are investigating traffic issues relating to the school and then we will be moving onto looking at the newly introduced car parking charges for the Community Centre car park. We will be questioning the effect that this will have on local businesses and the village as a whole. This will be studied through a series of mini investigations and filedwork.

On Thursday afternoon, both classes went into the village at 1.40pm and investigated the available car parking spaces directly around the school and in the two closest car parks.
We recorded our results on tally charts and are going to use them in our goegraphy/ maths lessons next week.
As you can see, there were many spaces in the Community Centre car park, is this due to the newly introduced charges? We will investigate this further during the term.
The photo on the right is a poster that has been put up in the window of a local business - here you can see that they are against the idea of car park charges.
Which way next children?
Here you are busy recording the empty spaces.

We were recording the available spaces to see whether there is sufficient parking for parents/ guardians/ grandparents to collect their children by car.
What next?
Next week, we will be transferring our results onto a map of the local area and evaluating them.
In groups we will draw our own conclusions and comment on our findings and suggest further questions to investigate.
More fun geography very soon!
