Let's Investigate Topic Overview

Topic: Let's Investigate

Dear Parent/Guardian, We hope that you all had a lovely half term and cannot believe that we are here in the final half term already. Our topic this half term is Let's Investigate: The emphasis is on investigating our diets, how we look after ourselves and issues in the local area.

Below, we have put together an overview highlighting the work that your son/daughter will be covering over this half term. We hope that it provides all the information that you require.
Literacy

Word and sentence level work:
Weekly spellings on a Monday
Using imperative verbs
Use of adverbs and adjectives for precision E.g. measure carefully, mix thoroughly.
Text level work:
Instruction writing E.g. how to make a healthy meal,
Poetic style: Word play, rhyme metaphor and word choice. To use and comment on the use of language effects E.g Alliteration.
Numeracy

· Multiplication · Rounding to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand. · Adding, subtracting and multiplication of decimals. · Investigating Line graphs. · Investigating angles. · Capacity, milliliters, liters. Etc. · Using measuring instruments · Time · Length · Knowing degrees of a turn with angles.

Geography
· We are investigating geographical issues in the locality: · Traffic and car parking charges in the village. · What is the issue? · Who is involved? · What are the long-term affects on the village?


DT · Researching healthy meals for a younger children. · How can we encourage younger children to eat healthy food? · Plan and create a healthy meal for a younger child.

ICT
· In this unit children learn to enter numbers, labels and simple formulae into a spreadsheet and to use the data to calculate totals. · Children will be introduced to spreadsheet software and will explore how changes in price and quantity can affect total cost. · Children will apply what they have learnt in this unit when exploring mathematical and scientific models

Welsh
· Focusing on the past tense in writing. · Writing about activities that we can do to keep healthy. · Writing diary entries. · Writing leaflets about staying healthy. · Giving reasons why we should do exercise and eat certain foods.

Science ·

· To understand that we need a balanced diet to stay healthy. · To recognise that food can be placed in to groups E.g., Fats, proteins · To investigate the link between diet and health. · To recognise that we need to stay healthy and maintain our muscles. · Exercise makes our heart and muscles work harder. · The heart is a muscle that pumps blood around the body. · Investigating pulse rates. · The affect of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs on the body.

Music The children will be enjoying their rhythmic skills, inventing rhythms. Researching composers, identifying musical features and patterns, composing and performing rhythmic accompaniments.

Art Investigating, Designing and producing Canal ware
PE

Outdoor PE: Competitive games. Indoor PE: Creative DANCE.

As per usual we have lost no time in year 5 so far by getting stuck into a very busy term as can be seen via our class blog (accessed from our school website http://www.rctednet.net/pontyclunprimary/ ).

Please check the blog as it is updated regularly, all class and whole school correspondence is now published on the blog as well as being sent out. (If any letters are lost or mislaid all the information is now easily available).

We are now able to offer you some lasting memories of the Llangrannog trip. Please complete the slip below and return it to myself or Mrs.Marlow. I will endeavor to get the CD’s to you as soon as possible. All monies collected will go toward school funds. I hope that you enjoy the memories of a great trip. Please note that the trip took place in group settings, therefore some children may appear more often than others, (all children who went on the trip will be on the disk).
