Practical Healthy Maths

More problem solving activities outside. This time the children were asked to answer questions relating to how many packets of fruit were sold by the fruit tuck shop.

Here we can see this group thinking carefully about how to answer the netball shoot-out question, or are they estimating for the hoola hoop challenge?

This group had lots of fun developing their maths skills on the yard yesterday! They were linking maths and science - estimating and timing themselves whilst exercising as part of their healthy eating topic.

This group were working out maths problems linked to athletes and each had a role in their group. Person 1 was the learner, 2 and 3 the critical friends and person 4 was the teacher. They found it difficult not to intervene, yet at times they had to use their thinking skills to explain carefully to others who had made mistakes. Tricky!

Here we can see another group estimating how many hoops they could get over the cones whilst undertaking the tasks. They were then faced with a difficult problem solving question to ask after they had finished.

Brains were working hard here! We had to time our group members running around the football court and work out the differences from our own estimations. Who was the closest?

How many seconds did it take you to do 30 speed bumps?

This group were predicting heights of the new apparatus in our nature garden. How accurate were they?

More measuring skills. The children measured the length of rope and had to use their reasoning skills to explain why the diagonal strips would be longer or shorter.

Gethin "I thought it was really fun and good exercise. It linked well with our "Keeping Healthy" topic. It was a hard challenge enjoyed by everyone"

Ben D "I think it was good because we are learning about "Keeping Healthy", I learnt loads"
