Shapes Shapes Shapes in Y5 today!

STAGE ONE - Mrs Marlow's maths set worked extremely hard this morning learning about 3d shapes. The children started the morning trying to work out the names of the 3d shapes buried in the sand on a whiteboard programme.
STAGE TWO - If you look carefully at the photos, you will notice that the class then moved on to a thinking skills placemat activity where they individually tried to work out the names of the 8 3d shapes on their table, before communicating their ideas with group members.

STAGE THREE - The children discussed properties of 3d shapes and learnt the terms "faces", "vertices" and "edges". They took part in a feely bag activity trying to describe their shapes to other classmates. They used their numeracy skills whilst counting the number of faces, edges and vertices.

STAGE FOUR - The children worked extremely hard completing a shape properties shape in their groups. They were very surprised to work out the number of edges on a dodecahedron! I wonder who can remember the correct term for a triangular based pyramid? Is it a) prism b) tetrahedron or c) pyramid?

STAGE FIVE - The children saw some real 3d shape objects from Mrs Marlow's house - who can remember what shape my bisto granules tub was? How about my shoe box?
STAGE SIX - The final part of the morning's activity involved learning about "nets" of shapes and recognising them. An activity based on nets took place this afternoon and you will be able to see the final products later on in the week.
Freddy Framework was extremely busy using his communication, numeracy and thinking skills this morning.
Remember the Jambori trip tomorrow morning - bring your reply slips in.
