We went out into the yard to investigate how sound is made and how it travels. We looked at vibrations, loudness and pitch. We hit the railings with our rulers- did the sound change if we hit the railings at the top or at the bottom?
The children found that the sound at the top was a slightly higher pitch than the bottom of the railings. Some decided that this was because the bottom of the railings are cemented into the floor, therefore, there is less vibration.
We then tried to see how sound changes when using the sound tubes.
We experimented in different ways. We found that the faster you spin the tube, the higher the pitch.
We listened with with the tube slightly bent.
We listened with the tube tied in a knot. We found that the sound was quieter.
We listened to the sound with the tube straight. We found that the straighter the tube, the louder the sound.
