Year 5 news update.

St David's Day
Well done to all the children who put their names forward for one of our competitions this year. It was great watching you play your instruments, recite the Welsh and English poems and sing the Welsh song. Da iawn, you have earnt lots of housepoints.
If you were one of the lucky ones who got through, don't forget to practise and if posssible learn your poem(s) off by heart for Friday.
We'll be finishing off all our written competitions in the morning.

Newspapers
J5 and J6 are in the newspaper! This weeks edition of the Pontypridd and Llantrisant Observer features our trip to the Chinese Restaurant for the New Year - why not go and buy a copy?

Mrs Marlow has just returned from a very disappointing Cardiff City football match which ended Cardiff 0-0 QPR. I looked out for Maria and Harry, but I couldn't spot them amongst the 17000 spectators! On the way home I bought a copy of the South Wales Echo only to find a large article and photo in the sports section about our school Squash Festival. I shall bring it to school in the morning.

Fruit Tuck
Don't forget the fruit tuck shop is now open and was a huge success today - 40p for a bag of fruit - melon, grapes, pineapple, apple. Mrs Marlow loved the pineapple. Congratulations Maria and Mercedes on a successful first day.

Mrs Marlow has finally got a new computer!

Hello Year 5!
Hope you are all enjoying Half Term? Mrs Marlow has been completely lost without her computer and the internet this week. I've got a lovely new laptop now and guess what the first site I visited was? Yes - this blog!
Well, don't forget that if you'd like to audition for something in the Eisteddfod, you must learn your words by Monday. Next week will be a very intensive Eisteddfod competition week.
See you all on Monday
Mrs Marlow

Sharing Assembly

As part of our sharing assembly the children decided that they wanted to explain how the Earth, Sun and Moon interact with each other. They created and planned the entire assembly themselves, what a fantastic job they did. Below is just a short extract from the assembly. Well done everyone you were all excellent.

Being successfull by Ben and Ioan

Today we have been looking at success in PSHE. These are some of our thoughts:

Success is doing something that people get amazed by.
Being successful means doing something that other people cant do as well as other people.
Other people look up to successful people as role models.
Study/train and you will become better and better at whatever you do.

As a class we came up with these successful people Wayne Rooney,JK Rowling,David Beckham,A Family,Rhianna,Richard Branson,Goerge Bush and Nelson Mendala.

Independent Thinking In Year 5 Science

Today in year 5 we have been working in groups of four to investigate gravity and forces. This links to Earth, Sun and Moon and how planets exert forces on each other and how gravity keeps our feet on the ground.

We had to investigate how to make our spinners spin well. By changing the variables that affect the spinning we were able to affect the spin.

We did a number of different experiments using magnets, how many paper clips can this magnet hold? How can we get more paper clips attached? We made space capsule parachutes and investigated how to make them land safely using string, napkins and yogurt pots.

We then made a formula 1 race track and used paper clips as cars. By placing the magnets underneath the paper we were able to control the speed and direction of the magnets.
