Science - Investigating Food Packaging

This afternoon we had lots of fun in J5! As part of our Healthy Eating Science topic, we were sorting food packages into food groups. We set up seven stations around the room and each group rotated and faced a different challenge.
Up above you can see one of the groups looking pleased with themselves as they were the first to a) sort the carbohydrates correctly b) order them from highest to lowest carbohydrate content. Bendigedig!

The challenge above was to find out which food items in the whole class had the highest protein, fat and carbohydrate content. The three winning products were Choco Rice Cereal, Dry Peanuts and a Yorkie. Do you know which is the protein, fat and carbohydrate?

The children were reading the nutritional value labels on the back of the food packets. When comparing items on different tables, we had to make sure we were reading the "per 100g" label to make it fair. Ask a member of J5 to explain why.

This group were surprised to find out the high protein content of prawns.

This group have filled their green hoola hoop with carbohydrates! We learnt that there are sugary and starchy carbohydrates and that both types give us energy.

The challenge above was to find out which of the items on the table was highest and lowest for protein.

Thinking Skill - Showing surprise at unexpected outcomes.
Not all of the answers were as easy as first thought for this group! Low fat yoghurt? Orange Juice? The children had to study the packages hard.

Good science skills, communicating and collaborating today J5. You worked hard - well done.

Year 5 Housepoint Winners

Well done to our 2008-2009 Year 5 Housepoint winners! The children above from J5 and below from J6 earned the most housepoints in their classes and were rewarded with a cinema trip today.

Geography - Asking Questions

J5 worked on planning the next step of our geography topic yesterday. The task was to come up with a set of questions to ask people in the village regarding their views on parking , charges and general traffic in the village.

The learning objective was "To ask questions relevant to a geographical issue in the locality."

The children knew that to be succesful in their task, they had to come up with 5 questions that would provide them with answers relating to our topic and would give them data to evaluate at a later stage.

Here you can see some of the questions the children came up with. They were working collaboratively in groups.

The task was more difficult than first anticipated. The children had to really think about how useful their questions would be to our topic - they found this challenging and many groups came up with questions that weren't applicable. They all realised this and became more specific in what they were asking.

The children also had to come up with two sets of questions. Set 1 for people who walked to the village and Set 2 for people who came in the car.

The question above will be useful in plotting where our interviewees parked on a map.

This afternoon we will be using our ICT skills to write up our final questionnaires in the Computer Suite.
We will be going into the village in small groups to ask our questions - either later this week or early next week.

Practical Healthy Maths

More problem solving activities outside. This time the children were asked to answer questions relating to how many packets of fruit were sold by the fruit tuck shop.

Here we can see this group thinking carefully about how to answer the netball shoot-out question, or are they estimating for the hoola hoop challenge?

This group had lots of fun developing their maths skills on the yard yesterday! They were linking maths and science - estimating and timing themselves whilst exercising as part of their healthy eating topic.

This group were working out maths problems linked to athletes and each had a role in their group. Person 1 was the learner, 2 and 3 the critical friends and person 4 was the teacher. They found it difficult not to intervene, yet at times they had to use their thinking skills to explain carefully to others who had made mistakes. Tricky!

Here we can see another group estimating how many hoops they could get over the cones whilst undertaking the tasks. They were then faced with a difficult problem solving question to ask after they had finished.

Brains were working hard here! We had to time our group members running around the football court and work out the differences from our own estimations. Who was the closest?

How many seconds did it take you to do 30 speed bumps?

This group were predicting heights of the new apparatus in our nature garden. How accurate were they?

More measuring skills. The children measured the length of rope and had to use their reasoning skills to explain why the diagonal strips would be longer or shorter.

Gethin "I thought it was really fun and good exercise. It linked well with our "Keeping Healthy" topic. It was a hard challenge enjoyed by everyone"

Ben D "I think it was good because we are learning about "Keeping Healthy", I learnt loads"

Let's Investigate Topic Overview

Topic: Let's Investigate

Dear Parent/Guardian, We hope that you all had a lovely half term and cannot believe that we are here in the final half term already. Our topic this half term is Let's Investigate: The emphasis is on investigating our diets, how we look after ourselves and issues in the local area.

Below, we have put together an overview highlighting the work that your son/daughter will be covering over this half term. We hope that it provides all the information that you require.
Literacy

Word and sentence level work:
Weekly spellings on a Monday
Using imperative verbs
Use of adverbs and adjectives for precision E.g. measure carefully, mix thoroughly.
Text level work:
Instruction writing E.g. how to make a healthy meal,
Poetic style: Word play, rhyme metaphor and word choice. To use and comment on the use of language effects E.g Alliteration.
Numeracy

· Multiplication · Rounding to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand. · Adding, subtracting and multiplication of decimals. · Investigating Line graphs. · Investigating angles. · Capacity, milliliters, liters. Etc. · Using measuring instruments · Time · Length · Knowing degrees of a turn with angles.

Geography
· We are investigating geographical issues in the locality: · Traffic and car parking charges in the village. · What is the issue? · Who is involved? · What are the long-term affects on the village?

DT · Researching healthy meals for a younger children. · How can we encourage younger children to eat healthy food? · Plan and create a healthy meal for a younger child.

ICT
· In this unit children learn to enter numbers, labels and simple formulae into a spreadsheet and to use the data to calculate totals. · Children will be introduced to spreadsheet software and will explore how changes in price and quantity can affect total cost. · Children will apply what they have learnt in this unit when exploring mathematical and scientific models

Welsh
· Focusing on the past tense in writing. · Writing about activities that we can do to keep healthy. · Writing diary entries. · Writing leaflets about staying healthy. · Giving reasons why we should do exercise and eat certain foods.

Science ·

· To understand that we need a balanced diet to stay healthy. · To recognise that food can be placed in to groups E.g., Fats, proteins · To investigate the link between diet and health. · To recognise that we need to stay healthy and maintain our muscles. · Exercise makes our heart and muscles work harder. · The heart is a muscle that pumps blood around the body. · Investigating pulse rates. · The affect of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs on the body.

Music The children will be enjoying their rhythmic skills, inventing rhythms. Researching composers, identifying musical features and patterns, composing and performing rhythmic accompaniments.

Food Packets/ Packaging!

Dear Year 5

Please can you collect as much food packaging/ wrappers/boxes etc.... as possiible and bring them to school on Tuesday. Things like weetabix boxes or an empty packet of frozen veg or chocolate bar wrappers/ plastic coke bottles. (All clean and nothing sharp e.g tins).

We will be using the items as part of our science topic - "healthy eating" and will not only be sorting the foods into groups, but will also be looking at the data on the back of the packets.

Please remember your food diaries for our science afternoon too.

Thank you
Mrs Marlow, Mr. Llewellyn
