LET'S GO FLY A KITE - HOMEWORK FOR THE WEEKEND

Year 5 Homework for the Bank Holiday Weekend!

In DT this term we will be making kites. Your homework for this weekend is to research kites and to come up with initial ideas about how to design and make the kites in school.
We realise that some children may not have access to information that will enable them to complete all of the homework, but we hope that they will be able to do as much of the homework as possible.

PLEASE RESEARCH KITES USING THE INTERNET, BOOKS, ASKING FRIENDS OR FAMILY WHO FLY KITES ETC… AND ATTEMPT TO ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS. YOU CAN SET OUT YOUR FINDINGS HOWEVER YOU WISH.

1. What are kites made of? (please list as many different materials as you can).

2. How do kites work? (stay up in the air). You can include a diagram here if it helps you to explain.

3. Draw the shape of as many different kites as possible, or cut out pictures of different shaped kites that you can find.

4. Perhaps you might want to go kite flying over the weekend and bring us a few photographs?

5. Feel free to bring in any other information about kites too.

Enjoy this mini-project and we will look forward to seeing your work on Tuesday.

Half Term Overview

Dear parents, our topic this half term is called "Going Underground", and looks at coal mining in the South Wales area. What was life like working underground? Why did we dig for coal? How did we get the coal to the surface? What has been the impact of coal mining in South Wales since the pits have closed? We will be visiting Big Pit in an attempt to give the children first hand experiences of working life underground. Wherever possible, we try to link our work to our topic. Please find below our overview of work to be covered for the half term and don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Watchout Hollywood Here We Come!!!!

Year 5 have been really busy this week filming and editing their films and adverts. J5 have written and produced short (silent)films. J6 have produced adverts for a variety of "off the shelf" products. The children wrote, directed, filmed and as you can see opposite, edited their own films. They have even added special effects and music to enhance the viewing experience. Once they are finished you will be able to watch them right here on the blog.

Below you can see the Filming process. Camera .... Action!!!

SHARING ASSEMBLY

Our merit award winners:

Today was our sharing assembly, we shared with the other year groups what we have learned about healthy food and keeping healthy. We now know that we need a varied, balanced diet with a range of foods from all food groups and a healthy lifestyle if we are to remain healthy. In order to get this message to the other classes the children and parents went to a great deal of effort to dress up in food costumes, wear sport's kits and bring fresh fruit and vegetables into school. Well done everyone and a big thank you to parents for their efforts.

Pontyclun Primary School's Egg Rolling Chamion 2010
